Proton-transfer reaction mass spectrometry.
Proton-transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) is a technique developed almost exclusively for the detection of gaseous organic compounds in air. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air have both natural and anthropogenic sources. Natural sources include the emission of organic gases by living objects, both plants and animals. A well-known example, which is discussed later in this review,...

Gathering information about a subject's physiological and pathophysiological condition from the `smell' of breath is an idea that dates back to antiquity. This intriguing concept of non-invasive diagnosis has been revitalized by `exhaled breath analysis' in recent decades. A main driving force was the development of sensitive and versatile gas-chromatographic and mass-spectrometric instruments ...
متن کاملOn the generalized mass transfer with a chemical reaction: Fractional derivative model
In this article using the inverse Laplace transform, we show analytical solutions for the generalized mass transfers with (and without) a chemical reaction. These transfers have been expressed as the Couette flow with the fractional derivative of the Caputo sense. Also, using the Hankel contour for the Bromwich's integral, the solutions are given in terms of the generalized Airy functions.
متن کاملOn-line monitoring of microbial volatile metabolites by proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry.
A method for analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from microbial cultures was established using proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). A newly developed sampling system was coupled to a PTR-MS instrument to allow on-line monitoring of VOCs in the dynamic headspaces of microbial cultures. The novel PTR-MS method was evaluated for four reference organisms: Escherichia coli,...
متن کاملIncreased sensitivity in proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry by incorporation of a radio frequency ion funnel.
A drift tube capable of simultaneously functioning as an ion funnel is demonstrated in proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) for the first time. The ion funnel enables a much higher proportion of ions to exit the drift tube and enter the mass spectrometer than would otherwise be the case. An increase in the detection sensitivity for volatile organic compounds of between 1 and 2 or...
